How The Brake Safe® Visual Brake Stroke Indicator Works!

Brake Safe® is a simple yet extremely accurate and effective means of providing a visual indication of air-brake stroke travel.

The Brake Safe® system consists of a corrosion resistant steel bracket, a unique one piece pre-measured reference unit, a tooled clevis indicator pin and highly visible indicator and reference pin sleeves.

The bracket is attached to each brake chamber, the pre-measured reference unit is secured to the universal bracket and the reference unit is aligned with the red clevis indicator pin. When the air-brakes are applied, the clevis pin indicator pin moves back and forth parallel to the pre-measured reference unit. As long as the clevis indicator pin is within the pushrod stroke limit indicated by the pre-measured reference unit, the power unit and trailer brakes are properly adjusted.

It takes only seconds to visually confirm that the indicator pin is within the allowable stroke or beyond the DOT limit. With Brake Safe® installed, out-of-adjustment brakes can be addressed quickly and accurately.

With brakes fully applied, if the red indicator pin rests between the two pre-set yellow reference pins,

the brakes are "IN" adjustment.

With brakes fully applied, if the red indicator pin rests beyond the two pre-set yellow reference pins, the brakes are "OUT OF" adjustment.

Trouble-Shooting and Important Diagnostic Aids

  1. With a full brake application of 90-100 PSI, if the clevis pin pointer or clamp on pointer only moves 1/4" to 3/8" this would be an indication that the slack is seized or defective.

  2. If the clevis pin pointer or clamp on pointer repeatedly show out of adjustment this is an indication that:
    • the brakes need to be inspected
    • the slack adjuster is worn or defective
    • the slack adjuster has not been triangulated or set up correctly
  3. If the slack adjuster is functioning normally, and there is minimal movement of the clevis pin or clamp on indicator of 1/4" to 3/8" this could be an indication of:
    • the diaphragm in the air chamber is weak or may have a hole in it but you can not detect an airleak.

  4. If the slack adjuster is functioning normally, and has been set up properly and Brake Safe® is still indicating an out of adjustment condition, this could be an indication that:
    • there is a cracked brake drum

    • a brake drum could be out of round (oval shaped)
  5. While performing an emergency brake test:
    • minimal movement of the clevis pointer or clamp on indicator would identify a weak or broken spring in the brake chamber. (This is almost impossible to determine by looking in the viewing port of a brake chamber)
  6. Brake Safe® greatly reduces a mechanic's diagnostic time determining air brake deficiencies, and needless re-adjustment of air brakes
  7. Brake Safe® will extend the operational life of slack adjusters. The more times a slack adjuster is adjusted, the shorter its life cycle
